Revitalizing Tradition with Easy Arch's Innovative Design

Unlike other buildings in the hutong district that serve a single purpose, the Xinghua Community Center embraces the concept of urban micro-renewal. By preserving the surrounding ecology and fostering increased interaction between the community and its residents, this center stands out as a beacon of innovation and inclusivity. The design features interactive windows that replace the traditional enclosed exterior walls, connecting the interior and exterior spaces seamlessly. Even children can easily peer into the center through the low windows, fostering a sense of curiosity and engagement.

The realization of the Xinghua Community Center is a testament to Easy Arch's commitment to sustainable design. The walls and floors are constructed using low-cost environmentally friendly materials that blend harmoniously with the hutong's characteristic color and texture. The exterior windows, previously high and closed off, have been transformed into square windows that encourage interaction and visual connectivity. By keeping the new windows within the existing openings, costs and energy consumption are minimized.

Spanning a gross floor area of 380 square meters, the Xinghua Community Center offers a variety of spaces for different activities. From a rooftop terrace covering 220 square meters, residents can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding trees and a tranquil pool. The center's multi-functional offices provide a hub for various services, including salon experiences, office spaces, negotiation meetings, art exhibitions, fitness activities, and spaces for the elderly to rest. Additionally, shared tools and health equipment are available, ensuring that the center caters to the diverse needs of the community.

Operating as a community neighborhood complex, the Xinghua Community Center encourages resident participation and collaboration. Local merchants plan and organize free, interesting experience activities within the center, enriching the lives of the surrounding residents. These activities not only benefit the community but also foster stronger connections between merchants and residents, creating a sense of belonging and loyalty. The center also hosts regular intangible cultural heritage salon experience activities, showcasing the rich cultural traditions of the hutong district.

The Xinghua Community Center, designed by Easy Arch, was completed between April 2020 and January 2021. Located at No. 8, Changqiao Hutong, Xicheng District, Beijing, this center is a testament to the power of design in transforming urban spaces. Through meticulous research and creative problem-solving, Easy Arch overcame the challenges posed by the limited space and lack of public areas in the historic district.
